He admired the Navitimer chronograph line and wanted to wear one on a trip to space, but would need some customization to improve its usefulness in space. Adding a 24-hour scale allowed him to track the day-night cycle in orbit. The Cosmonaute watch thus became the first Swiss watch to enter space, and a limited edition celebratory was launched on the occasion of Breitling's 140th anniversary.The new Navitimer B12 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Limited Edition is 41 mm in diameter and comes in an 18k red gold case, giving space explorers a more luxurious feel. It retains the Navitimer’s wide faceted lugs and classic chronograph pusher. Additionally, there is a bi-directional bezel with a slide rule scale.For the Cosmonaute, the key feature is the dial, as the 24-hour scale we discussed earlier replaces the regular 12-hour scale. This is an important distinction because by replacing the 12-hour scale, the watch does not become dual time zone or GMT. The limited edition watch features a dark green dial with sunray brushing, black chronograph subdials, gold-tone hands, and beige luminous coating on the Arabic numerals. Aesthetically, it is similar to the green Navitimer B01 Chronograph 46, except that the case size is reduced, the hour markers are thinner, and the dial is more compact.Inside the Breitling Navitimer B12 Chronograph 41 Astronaut Limited Edition is the B12 automatic movement. First produced in 2016, it is a 24-hour version of the B01 seen in other Navitimer models. It has a really good 70-hour power reserve and COSC chronometer certification, ensuring accuracy and reliability. The movement can be seen through the case back, and is engraved with the words "First Swiss Wristwatch in Space/Navitimer Cosmonaute May 24,1962" to pay tribute to the history of this model.Overall, the Astronaut is an interesting alternative take on the Navitimer 41, and I like that Breitling kept it a limited edition as it makes the watch feel more special.
